Showgirls opened at Baltimore's "historic Senator theater," (Google it, LOL) and I was there--on this date in 1995. The Senator shows a mix of artsy and blockbusters, but it chose Showgirls in a show of solidarity to the first public release of an NC-17 film. It was a packed house that night. A mix of snooty Senator regulars, curious couples, horny frat boys, and a horny guy named Dave who also happened to be interested in the Historic Senator Theater sticking it to the man by showing such filth.
After the in-person introduction by the tuxedo-clad owner (this is normal at the first showing of films) and the previews, the screen went black but faded into the MPAA screen---"This film has been rated NC-17 by the..."
