I Spit on Your Grave opens in theaters.
“Rape and revenge” stands as one of the most remarkable exploitation genres that, truly, only could have existed in the wild-and-wooly-bushed 1970s. And the Gone with the Wind of rape-and-revenge films is writer-director Meir Zarchi’s I Spit on Your Grave.
Willowy redhead Camille Keaton (granddaughter of silent-comedy great Buster Keaton) stars as a novelist whose solitary weekend retreat in the woods in interrupted by gang-rape. More than once. She then exacts payback via hanging, axe murder, and death by blood loss from a knife wound where a penis once was.
Spit played grindhouses and drive-ins deep into the 1980s and became an immediate blockbuster in the early days of home video.

Cheerleader-movie icon Cheryl “Rainbeaux” Smith dies.
After a string of remarkable exploitation films such as The Swinging Cheerleaders (1974), The Pom Pom Girls (1976), Massacre at Central High (1976), and The Incredible Melting Man (1977), Cheryl “Rainbeaux” Smith ruled as the most singularly beguiling starlet of the drive-in era.
Then, when Cheryl vanished in 1982, she became one of cinema’s most enigmatic figures, prompting fans to wonder for decades what became of their beloved Rainbeaux.
Tragically, news of Ms. Smith succumbing to liver disease hit just as Synapse Films began work on a special-edition DVD of one of her most sought-after titles, Lemora (1973).
Thanks to her legion of devotees, though, the legacy of Cheryl “Rainbeaux” Smith lives on. Rah-rah-raw, forevermore.

This day in 1977 saw the release of major-studio sexfest First Love, directed by Joan Darling, who had previously helmed TV shows like Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, and featuring nudity from former Partridge Family fox and future LA Law babe Susan Dey and the impossibly sultry Bevery D’Angelo.
Based on a short story by Harold Brodkey, First Love stars The Greatest American Hero’s William Katt as a naive college student learning about love and sex for the first time from Susan and Beverly to the soft strains of the great Cat Stevens.

Founder of the Hustler empire and subject (along with Francisco Goya, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Andy Kaufman) of a biopic directed by Oscar-winning director Milos Foreman, Larry Flynt was born 66 years ago today in impoverished Magoffin County in Kentucky.
Larry Flynt’s life and career are the stuff of legend, most of it recounted in the movie, which stars Woody Harrelson and Courtney Love.

Ten years ago today, we lost the legendary performer and actress Wendy O. Williams to suicide. I will always remember Wendy fondly as a strong, smart and extremely hot babe who always entertained audiences as well as made them think. Whether she was destroying musical equipment (topless) onstage with her band The Plasmatics, revealing her rack and rump in Reform School Girls (1986), or living out her passionate devotion to animal welfare, Wendy was always an original and an icon. Gone too soon, but not forgotten.
moreOn March 27, 1973, Marlon Brando won a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in The Godfather. However, Brando had grown angry over his country's poor treatment of Native Americans, particularly the negative stereotypes perpetuated by Hollywood and TV. Accordingly, Brando refused his Oscar and contacted his friends at the American Indian Movement (AIM) about sending a representative to the Academy Awards in his place to turn down the Oscar and state his reasons for refusing it. The AIM leaders picked former winner of the 1970 Miss American Vampire competition Sacheen Littlefeather to go on stage when Brando's name was called, officially refuse the award, and read a 15-page statement written by Brando about the 71-day standoff between U.S. Marshals and members of AIM that was currently ongoing in the town of Wounded Knee, South Dakota, which was also the site of a massacre of Oglala Sioux Indians by the US military in 1890. The producers of the Academy Awards threatened to arrest her if she spoke for more than 45 seconds, so Sacheen improvised her comments onstage and read Brando's statement in its entirety to the press. Seven months later, Sacheen appeared nude in Playboy magazine. She also appeared in a number of films, including The Trial of Billy Jack (1974) and Johnny Firecloud, in which she got topless. For her stance against injustice and her bulbous chest-wigwams, Sacheen Littlefeather gets the one-handed salute from Mr. Skin.
