Moon Bloodgood's Topless Scene in Terminator Salvation Hits the Cutting Room Floor

PG-13-rated summer blockbuster action movies aren't exactly a fertile ground for celebrity nudity. Sure, you'll get Megan Fox looking sexy in Transformers, but it's unlikely she'll unleash those sought-after breasts. So it's not much of a surprise that, despite rumors to the contrary, Terminator Salvation looks to be completely skinless.

What is surprising is the scene featuring Moon Bloodgood nude was not the scene that needed to be cut for the film to secure the teen-friendly PG-13 rating. The film's director, McG, told Sci-Fi Wire that only one scene needed to be cut for the PG-13 ratingand it didn't involve any boobs. Instead, the scene in question showed one character stabbing another in the shoulder with a screwdriver.

But when asked about the DVD version of the film, McG gave hope that the nude scene will make the cutat least in the DVD extras, saying, "I think I'll include all the extra scenes." He thankfully elaborated:

There's a topless scene of Moon Bloodgood that I thought was a very beautiful scene, that Moon thought was a beautiful scene, that we ultimately cut because we didn't want to fall into any of the cliches of the genre, like "Here's the scene where the beautiful girl takes her top off." I thought it was a soft moment between a man and a woman that was designed to echo the Kelly McGillis/Harrison Ford moment in Witness, for God's sake. They never touch each other; they just notice each other. But, in the end, it felt more like a gratuitous moment of a girl taking her top off in an action picture, and I didn't want that to convolute the story or the characters.

While it would be nice to see Moon's dunes on the big screen, DVD extras nudity is better than no nudity. Plus, this is in keeping with the series' pattern, as The Terminator and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines contained nudity but Terminator 2: Judgment Day kept Linda Hamilton's loaded weapons sheathed.

But perhaps the best thing to take away from this is that Terminator Salvation's PG-13 rating didn't seem to depend on the absence of nudity, and the implication is that the film could have landed that rating even with a "gratuitous" breast shot, giving us hope for nudity in future PG-13-rated films. This could only be a boon for the movie industry. After all, wouldn't Star Trek have been even better with bare racks?
