According to what I heard, Michelle Johnson was only 17! when she did that nude scene. She needed her parents' consent and some sort of court papers. I might be wrong. You probably have better sources, but I distinctly remember some sort of ruckus about her age before the release of the movie. Thank You.

Thora Birch was a body double. A lot of people fall for that one but watch again. They use the window panes to hide the line where they superimpose her head on the body double's torso. Clever effect.

No way that can be true. It's not listed on here as being a body double. After all these years you would think somebody would've known if it was indeed a double and not Birch's actual body. It looks real to me. Mr. Skin confirms it's real too.

This is what I found on IMDB's site and they say it was really Birch who got naked.

'Since Thora Birch was barely 17 at the time she made the film, and thus classified as a minor in the United States, her parents had to approve her brief topless scene in the movie and they and child labor representatives were on the set for the shooting of it.'

Oh, this is totally true. The IMDB is a credible source, but Mr. Skin had this sniffed out as truth from the beginning. It's not rumor, myth, or legend. She was underage, and the child labor presence story is true. The question is... Why her, and why not the others? The American Beauty scene was sexual. Romantic and beautiful, yes, but certainly sexual.

So Dave are you saying you agree that Birch DID in fact use a body double and that we have been lied to all these years thinking it was really Birch we saw up there? I find it hard to believe and think it is without a doubt Birch and not some double. Otherwise Mr. Skin would've pointed this out and made us aware of it so we wouldn't be fooled.

I truly believe that what you're seeing IS Thora Birch, and not the work of some dastardly body double. The IMDB link is correct, and so is Skin Central. No way we would go all these years only to find out NOW that we were betrayed. You can see her face in the SAME SHOT when she removes her bra for Wes Bentley and his camcorder, then immediately after Chris Cooper walks in and slugs him, you see her pull the curtain to cover her ample toplessness. Her head moves in perfect sync with the body, so no way her head was superimposed on the naked body of another as Jones previously pointed out.

In another Thora Birch film....The Hole, Keira Knightly is on here too and I'm fairly sure she was only 15 when that was shot, another example of parental consent I think....

Phoebe Cates is awesome!!!! She didn't do much nudity after this scene, but what a scene it is. She remains one of my favorites and she is still my wet dream!!!!
