Getting Bai with a Little Help from Mr. SkinShe’s gorgeous. She’s dangerous. She’s an international sensation who’s not afraid of her own sex appeal – or anything else.
She’s Bai Ling, the multitalented beauty born in China who’s now a Hollywood sensation co-starring in the action smash Crank 2: High Voltage.
After a stint in the Chinese army, teenage Bai became a star in Asia before landing her breakthrough role as a sadistic, incestuous villain in The Crow.
Since then, Bai has emerged as one of cinema’s most joyfully provocative figures, both in on-screen and off.
Openly bisexual and happy to discuss her most erotically alluring features – no other mainstream actress we’ve yet come across so proudly talks up her own nipples – Bai Ling sat with MrSkin.com to talk about Crank 2, and all sorts of other delights that just happened to pop up.
Crank 2: High Voltage is available on DVD and Blu-ray now.
Read the interview or play the unedited audio below.
Tell us about your character in Crank: High Voltage.
I play Ria. She's kind of an outrageous character. She's funny and crazy and kind of innocent. She goes for it and does things to the extreme and in a provocative sexy way.
Like Jason [Statham's character] saves her life and she says, "Oh, you saved my life. I'm yours."
She's fearless and I had so much fun playing her because the director allowed me to do whatever I wanted and say whatever I wanted to say. It's totally a free spirit that I gave to her which is so fun to do and to watch.
Well, that's kind of how you are in real life, isn't it? A free spirit?
How did you know that? [Laughs] Yes, I am.
Are you funny, crazy, and innocent?
Yes, I am kind of edgy and crazy and fearless and always trying something fun.
Do you like doing nude scenes?
I have a beautiful body. I don’t do any exercise, I’m just lucky. And if I have a beautiful body, there’s nothing to be ashamed of in showing it if it’s necessary for the character.
Because film is reality. We eat, we go to the toilet, we fight, we laugh, we cry, we make love. Nudity is part of the reality of life every day.
If it’s necessary, you can only add to the reality of the character. As a professional actor, I don’t have a problem with it, because I do look good.
What’s your favorite part of your body?
[Laughs] You really want to know?
Yes of course!
Probably you already know. My nipples!
Once in Asia they asked me [what are the windows to the soul] and the word “nipples” almost came out of my mouth. But then I swallowed and said, “The eyes. The eyes are the window to the soul.” And that’s true too.
But sometimes after I get out of the shower I look at my nipples and think, “Wow, they’re provocatively something else.”
I feel like they do not belong to me. They’re supposed to be like an African woman’s nipples. They’re something sexy.
I think sometimes on the red carpet [indistinct] shows up [indistinct] critics, all of that.
But I think nipples [are] part of our body. You know they’re beautiful, there’s nothing wrong… I feel myself [indistinct] nipples, pieces of my dream.
If you think healthily, nipples have so many meanings. When the baby is born, the first thing they touch is the nipple. It’s giving. It’s loving to the child.
We’re big fans of your nipples. Can you say something exclusive about your nipples for MrSkin.com?
No, because a lot of people are talking about nipples. I say, “Well, if you’re talking about my nipples, I might as well too. Because they’re beautiful, they’re provocative.”
Do you like doing lesbian scenes in movies?
Yes, I did Dim Sum Funeral where I was a lesbian. When women are in love, it’s more feminine, more romantic in a provocative way.
Women are more mysterious, more complicated… and uniquely alluring.
I like it. It’s more subtle, more gentle.
It’s kind of ironic that your name is “Bai” and you are bi.
I know.
When did you discover that you like to sleep with both men and women?
You know it’s funny, when I was in Asia and I was in the [Chinese] Peoples’ Liberation Army in Tibet, there were only seven of us [women] in the whole base.
We lived together in one little house. Our beds were next to each other like desks in an office. We peed, we changed, we washed, everything in front of each other. We felt safe with each other.
So that’s how it started. Like sisters, we kissed each other, hugged each other, slept with each other all the time.
We didn’t know the words for “lesbian” or “gay,” we just liked each other because it was safe.
For a man, it’s not safe. They’re more like animals.
I like men, but [with] women, I appreciate the beauty and gentleness of a woman. So I like them too.
It’s not something for me to distinguish or realize. It just happened. This was presented in front of me.
In the Western World a lot of women, black or white, are so much bigger than me. They find me a little feminine sexy thing, a little girl. So they want to provocatively seduce me.
I have had many experiences like, “Wow! What is this?”
I’m curious, so I try it with them.
That’s something to experience in life, to find out what you like or don’t like, to learn and enjoy that experience and that moment.
Can you give us the name of a Hollywood actress that you hooked up with?
[Laughs] I can’t name anybody because of their privacy, but with a couple of them I enjoy that flirting.
I enjoy that fantasy of kind of a forbidden feeling, and secrecy.
Secrecy makes it very sexy. Provocative.
Sure.
My character in Southland Tales is very sexy. And in Crank 2, Ria is so open, it becomes so sexy so provocative.
Do you still want to die having sex?
Um… I don’t want to die now. But it’s a beautiful way to die.
What do you remember about your first nude scene?
My first nude scene was in The Crow.
It originally didn’t have a nude scene but when the director saw me at the audition, he suddenly wanted me nude.
The first time I had a conversation with the director Alex Proyas, I did not even speak English, so I had to look at the dictionary.
I found the word “nipples.” (It’s funny [we’re talking about] nipples again).
He called me from the studio and said, “I do a lot nudity and the girls show everything. It’s not a problem. But apparently you don’t want to show [anything], so we have to discuss it. What do you want to do?”
I said (and my English was so bad), “As long as you cover my nipples!”
[Laughs]
That was my requirement, that they show my back, which I think is a very seductive and sexy way to [introduce] my character in The Crow.
If you could pick any Hollywood actress to do a lesbian scene with, who would you choose?
Everybody says Angelina. Why is that?
Because I think she’s very sexy. I knew her; I made two movies with her. I think she’s intelligent, daring. She’s a little bit like me. We have the same spirit.
So it’s fun because she’s free.
Some people are not free so you are not going to have the real fun. With her she’s free so you can experience things where you don’t even know or don’t remember who you are. You’re just in that passion, that romance.
That’s what I’m looking for. It’s not the person.
Was it fun knocking out Amy Smart in Crank: High Voltage?
Of course! I wish they had more fighting because girl fighting is always fun. Men and women enjoy watching it.
When you’re fighting, even in real life, with a woman, you just laugh because it’s fun. It’s a like a joke.
Well Bai, we love Crank: High Voltage and we’re big fans of your nipples here at MrSkin.com.
[Laughs] Thank you! I have more [indistinct] nipples to give you, so just watch out!
What do you have coming up? Are you taking off your clothes in a movie?
I have a movie called A Beautiful Life coming out in October.
I play a stripper who desperately wants to be a big singer and I sing (it’s my voice) American songs while I’m stripping in the movie. You’ll enjoy it.
Do you go full-frontal?
You’ll have to see! I dance and I sing at the same time on the stage in front of all the gentlemen.
Oh, that’s fantastic.
[Laughs] Oh, you’re dirty!
