With the Nightmare on Elm Street series in trouble, Robert Englund got a second shot at a horror franchise with The Phantom of the Opera (1989), a weird retelling of Gaston Leroux's classic novel. Jill Schoelen is a modern-day opera singer who finds herself sent back in time to 1881 London when she performs the works of an unknown composer. Englund is the composer who sold his soul to the Devil and is now a mutilated maniac who murders anyone who doesn’t share his enthusiasm for his favorite new songstress. The plot doesn’t get very classy, but Jaclyn Mendoza shows off some hooters worthy of the opera. Irish beauty Molly Shannon also makes an early appearance on her way to stardom on Saturday Night Live.
