Past and Present Pin-Ups Meet Up!

China white skin, black hair topped off with a cap of shiny bangs, a boom-boom bod that makes one weak in the knees. We could be describing dearly departed pinup legend Bettie Page . . . or present-day burlesque queen Dita Von Teese.

Surprisingly, the two were able to meet sometime before Page passed away last week.

According to IMDb:

Von Teese remembers her encounter with the star fondly.

Of their meeting, Von Teese recalls, "She looked me up and down and said, 'You're an attractive girl, but a poor Bettie Page mimic'.

"I said, 'I know' and she laughed."

Iconic Pinup Model Dies at 85

Today, more than 50 years after her career as a pinup model ended, the name and image of Bettie Page are still as well known as ever they were to rockabilly rebels, light bondage enthusiasts, and the women who make up roughly 102% of the fan-base of “burlesque” entertainment.

Yesterday, Bettie made headlines again when she died after her family took her off the life support she had been on since her heart attack earlier this month.

In the 1950s, Bettie had a career as a pinup model, appearing in men’s magazines like Playboy and posing for the nudie pics of “camera club” photographers.

On its September 1998 cover, Vanity Fair famously showcased a luminous, milky-skinned blonde poking through a sexily sheer, stiff-nipple-clinging dress and wondered if she would be Hollywood's next “It Girl.”

The model was Gretchen Mol and she soon thereafter became one of Hollywood’s all-time hottest “Tit Girls” when Forever Mine was released on this date in 1999.

While Gretchen’s overall career may not have ever exploded into Julia-Roberts-like mainstream superstardom the way Vanity Fair predicted it would, she has remained a skin-sistently gorgeous presence on-screen, especially in edgy (and naked) fare such as The Notorious Bettie Page.

Aside from being Earth Day, today also happens to be the birthday of some of the Earth's most notable skin-habitants. Some of them, like V.I. Lenin (father of the Soviet Union), J. Robert Oppenheimer (father of the atomic bomb) and Flora Disney (mother of Walt Disney) are important because of the newsworthy place they occupy in history. Other are significant for reasons that are far more nudes-worthy. Here are my six skinstant celebrity birthdays for today.

Marilyn Chambers went from being the smiling woman on the cover of the Ivory Soap box to getting a face full of soapy scum in the seminal seventies porno flick Behind the Green Door (1972). Five years later, Chambers appeared in Canadian sci-fi auteur David Cronenberg's vampire flick Rabid (1977), where she sucks down a different type of body fluid.

Baltimore's favorite son John Waters' early work, especially his undisputed masterpiece Pink Flamingos (1972), was enormously influential in the development of underground cinema, midnight movie culture, and generally bad taste in entertainment. Waters shocked the world in the 90s when he came out as a gay man and today he continues to make twisted movies. And I love him for it.

Chicago native Jack Nitzsche died in 2000, but not before filling out an incredibly impressive resume. He famously worked and had subsequent falling-outs with Phil Spector and Neil Young in the 60s and 70s, but I especially appreciate the soundtracks he produced for skinematic classics like Performance (1970), Hardcore (1979), Cruising (1980) Personal Best (1982), 9 ½ Weeks (1986) and The Hot Spot (1990). Jack, we need you back!

One of Hollywood's most enduring talents, Jack Nicholson's career is the stuff of legend.
